Meet Hannah Meyer, the Daytona native who stars on DME Academy’s indoor and outdoor volleyball squads. When she’s not training, she’s pursuing her goal of becoming a pediatric physician assistant. The 18 year old student-athlete has her work cut out for her, juggling 4 practices, 1 high school class, and 5 college classes each week.

Hannah developed a passion for the game of volleyball in 6th grade when she became an immediate stand-out on her middle school team. After falling in love with the sport, she was determined to take her game to the next level, and that’s when her teammates introduced her to DME Academy. Hannah has never looked back.

So what’s her favorite part about DME Academy? That’s easy, it’s the family atmosphere. Everyone on campus is friendly and welcoming, including athletes and coaches that she’s never met. On top of that, Hannah says that it’s evident that the staff cares about the student-athletes' success in life even more than they care about success on the court.

When Hannah’s father was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, her DME family was there for her every step of the way. Her teammates went the extra mile to support her, making sure to regularly check in on Hannah and her family, and to letting her know how much they cared about her. Hannah's dad is doing much better now, but this memory of DME Academy will stick with her forever. She has created long lasting friendships and has found an incredible support system. She has never been closer to any team before, and considers her DME teammates to be family.

To this day, Hannah is still inspired by her incredible DME Academy family, and she plans to coach volleyball so she can mentor girls and help them create the same bonds that she has. When she looks back on her experience, she knows that 6th grade girl trying out for her first ever volleyball team would be proud of who she has become and the relationships she’s developed along the way.

Two Girls Volleyball Teams Are Headed  the National Championships

This summer, DME Volleyball will make history.

For the first time in their storied history, DME will send two volleyball teams to the Girls’ Junior National Championships, held in Las Vegas, after DME’s 12 Black Team and 15 Black Team qualified for nationals.

“I am so proud of our Girls volleyball players, coaches, and staff,” said Dan Panaggio, owner of DME Academy. “When you look at what those girls fought through to get to this point, it really speaks to the grit, focus, and determination of everyone involved.”

15 Black Team suffered a major blow when their setter went down in the semifinal, but head coach Alvaro Sanchez had faith in his team.

“Our performance wavered a few times, but their resilience did not,” Sanchez said. “I would say we emptied the tank every game. After our setter went down in the semifinal, they could’ve chosen to pout, but these girls kept fighting.”

Dawn Moses, DME’s Director of Indoor Volleyball and head coach of 12 DME Black Team, similarly praised her girls’ performance to reach nationals, highlighting their fight.

“Our team had to battle all weekend to get this bid,” Moses said.  “We had to beat a good team after losing a game 8-25, then we dug a hole against another good team and had to battle back.  The confidence this team gains each time they must work together and fight together for the victory has molded them into a great team.”

Next up for the girls is a trip to the Girls Junior National Championship at the Las Vegas Convention Center. And while there’s plenty of work to do between now and then, Moses is grateful for everyone involved who put in the work to get to this point.

“Without the complete and total support of everyone who contributes, [these teams] would not, could not, be the excellent functioning winning teams we have been privileged to see this year.”

No one can say for sure how things will play out in Las Vegas, but there’s no doubt that both teams will make the fans, friends, and families proud.

After an amazing weekend at the Big South Tournament Qualifier event in Atlanta  DME Academy’s Volleyball 15 Elite Black team Coach Alvaro was recently interviewed by John Tawa from VolleyballMag.com.

Q: What were your expectations going into the weekend?

A: After going in with expectations at MEQ and being let down, my only expectation was for our team to fight as hard as we could, to prove we learned our lesson of taking opportunities for granted; the team sure proved they learned that lesson.

Q: How did you match or exceed those expectations?

A: Our performance wavered a few times, but their resilience did not. I would say we emptied the tank every game. Our setter went down in the semifinal. They could’ve chosen to pout, but these girls kept fighting.

Q: What was the key moment that sparked your qualification?

A: Hard to pick a moment, but one in particular that stands out could be a transition kill in the third set. Our blockers made a poor read, thought the middle was being set and their setter shot the ball to the outside and no block was up. Their outside blasted a ball down the line, and Gaby Conway was ready on defense and dug a great ball that Alyssa Kornegay got to Emma Van Deusen on the outside and she put it away seam 1/6.

Q: Which players stepped up to help you reach your goal?

A: Everyone starred in their role, it was a true team effort or we couldn’t have won. Literally, everyone played at some point on Sunday. Alyssa Kornegay ran a great offense with 245 assists on the weekend, Ivy Westfall led us with 111 digs and passed a 2.23, and Emma Van Deusen paced us with 110 points on the weekend, hitting a career-high .333 for the tournament. Ella Pringle also stabilized our serve-receive passing a 2.23 and scored 83 points.

DME Academy’s 15 Elite Black team is headed to the Girls Junior National Championship at the Las Vegas Convention Center June 26-July 5th. This will be DME’s 4th team to make an appearance at Nationals. Be sure to check back here for additional information as it becomes available.
