Laura Stegall, DME Academy’s Athletic Director, and Volleyball coach earns Purdue University’s Title IX Distinguished Service Award

Laura Stegall, DME Academy Athletic Director and Volleyball Coach

Laura Stegall, DME Academy’s Athletic Director, and volleyball coach has been selected as one of the recipients of Purdue University’s Title IX Distinguished Service Award. Title IX was first enacted in 1972 and the award from Purdue is being presented to Stegall in honor of its 50th anniversary. Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or education program that receives funding from the Federal Government.

Stegall and fifteen other individuals are receiving this reward to highlight their significant contributions to the advancement of gender equality in higher education and intercollegiate athletic programs.

Stegall graduated from Purdue University in Fort Wayne in the spring of 2002. Since graduating, she has gone on to earn countless accolades in the volleyball world. She is a true professional when it comes to launching volleyball programs and helping them blossom.
It all started in 2004 when Stegall spearheaded Indiana Tech’s program and led them to four consecutive winning seasons. She then went on to become the assistant coach of Embry-Riddle University. During her tenure there, the Eagles broke onto the scene with their first NAIA National ranking and made their first-ever national appearance at the National Tournament.

After her stay at Embry-Riddle, she went on to become the head coach of Daytona State College’s volleyball team.

Laura Stegall is being honored by Purdue Academy at the same time as her former coach, Kelley Hartley Hutton, who is also receiving the same award for her role as director of athletics at PFW. Which includes 15 seasons as head coach of the women’s volleyball program and 13 years as senior woman administrator, and chairperson of the Summit League Women’s Basketball Committee.

“Being put on this list with all of these amazing people is an honor in itself”. Says Stegall, “But earning Purdue’s Distinguished Service Award at the same time as my former coach, Kelley Hutton, is an even bigger personal achievement.”

In addition to her commitment to collegiate volleyball, Stegall has devoted her free time to enhance the development of young volleyball players in the Volusia County area. She is also the co-founder of If I Can I Will – Win The Day Foundation and author of the book “Diary of a No Name Girl” in which she coined the phrase “survive, thrive, live, repeat.”

Stegall is a true class act and DME Academy is incredibly lucky to have such a stand-up person as athletic director.

Congrats to New Smyrna Beach on winning the volleyball State Championship!

Alvaro Sanchez, Head Coach of DME Academy Volleyball holds the state championship trophy

It started with a serve, followed by a few hundred passes, sets, and spikes. And it ended with a block, leaving the New Smyrna Beach High School Barracudas as volleyball state champions.

Located about 20 miles south of DME Academy, the Barracudas’ indoor volleyball team is led by head coach Alvaro Sanchez, who is also DME Volleyball’s Master and Academy Coach. Their assistant coach is Jill Kornegay, who also acts as DME Club Volleyball’s Assistant Club Director.

Many members of the New Smyrna Beach Indoor Volleyball team are also athletes on the DME Club Volleyball team. These nine players include Teagan Lux, Ivy Westfall, Lily Schlageter, Quinn Kraljic, Libby Nickels, Gracie Newell, Chloe Gibson, Hannah Zona, and Alyssa Kornegay.

Leading up to the state championship match, the Barracudas boasted an impressive record of 24-2 including a win at the state’s inaugural beach volleyball championship last spring.

Although they entered the final match of the championship with confidence, they were no strangers to their opponent, the Viera High School Hawks. These two teams had faced off last fall when the Hawks defeated the Barracudas in the playoffs in the regional finals.

Determined to come out on top, the Barracudas fought hard in every single game, needing all five sets to get the win (23-25, 25-15, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14). They won the final point of the match on a block by Newell, sealing the victory and their title as state champions.

This comes as the first indoor volleyball state championship in New Smyrna Beach High School history. DME’s very own Newell led the Barracudas with four blocks throughout the match.

Not only did they come home as state champions, but these athletes also solidified their legacy at New Smyrna Beach High School.

Congratulations to the New Smyrna Beach Barracuda’s indoor volleyball team on this incredible accomplishment, and congratulations to Coach Sanchez, Coach Kornegay, and the nine members of the DME Club Volleyball team!

Making Names For Themselves and DME Volleyball

Four Students from DME Volleyball have been nominated for the 2022 AVCA Phenom List

Headers

At DME Academy,  it is not out of the ordinary to host some of the best athletes in their lanes. That is why, when the 2022 AVCA Phenom Nominations came out it was no surprise that four DME athlete’s names were included. Emma Van Duesen, Alyssa Kornegay, Ivy Westfall and Gabby Conway were all nominated for the honor.

Making the Phenom List is no walk in the park. There are specific criteria that an athlete must meet to be considered. They must be:

To be nominated for the list is already an achievement in itself.

“This group of athletes has been playing together for many years at DME,” said Dawn Moses, director of volleyball at DME Academy. “They work extremely hard at their individual positions and are very deserving of this honor.”

The girls are local to the area and play on their respective high school teams. Kornegay and Westfall play for New Smyrna Beach, Van Duesen represents Deland, and Conway plays for Spruce Creek High School in Daytona Beach, FL. All four girls are expected to graduate in 2024 and have college volleyball in their futures, thanks to DME Academy’s competitive club volleyball program.

“DME is like a home away from home for me, an extended family. A family that has made a positive impact on who I am today, on and off the court. I’ve learned how to be a student-athlete and I am able to do well in school and club volleyball.” says Alyssa Kornegay. ” I make sure to have excellent time management by doing homework before practice, studying on the way home and getting as much sleep as I can so I am ready to do it all again the next day. It’s part of doing more everyday, the DME way!”

This year will be the 11th year that the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) will host the invite-only Phenom College Preparatory Program. Since the program started, 80% of the athletes who have participated have gone on to play in college. This high-level showcase draws in more than 200 college coaches each year, so it is crucial that the girls bring their A-game.

The 2022 AVCA Phenom College Prep Program is taking place on December 15th-17th in Omaha, Nebraska. We wish them the best of luck!

Lloy Ball and DME Academy Sell Out Summer Volleyball Camp

American volleyball star brings his knowledge to the courts at DME Academy

More than 90 girls had been patiently waiting all year long for July 17th to roll around. When it finally came, they were treated to a week-long volleyball camp with one of the most decorated players in U.S. history. DME Academy hosted a summer training camp for middle school and high school aged volleyball players with special guest, Lloy Ball.

Ball was a member of the American national team from 1993 to 2008 and participated in the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004. He holds a gold medal for his efforts in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where team USA took the top spot.

“When Laura [Stegall] asked me to come and run this volleyball camp this week, I was very intrigued because I believe this is the new model for our country, which is what the rest of the world has been doing for decades,”said Ball. “Putting our young student athletes in a position to train at the highest level while of course encouraging the academic side of it. DME has great facilities, has great leadership and has great coaches. And I have no doubt over time. They will continue to turn out great student athletes that not only have great careers here at the academy, but at the next level as well.”

Over the course of six days, Ball took his many years of professional volleyball experience and passed it down to the next generation of star athletes. The camp held many training sessions, team building activities and an ample amount of opportunities for the girls to experience ‘The World’s Most Famous Beach’ including a sunset trip down to the boardwalk.

With more than 12 training sessions, the girls were able to work on every skill from setting, communication, passing, spiking, blocking, digging and serving. Monday through Friday, the campers followed a detailed schedule that focused on their skills on the court and team-building activities off the court. A sample day in a DME volleyball camp looks like this…

“My passing has greatly improved after attending the camp at DME,” said Danny Bell, who traveled from California to attend the camp. “It was amazing to be coached by a former USA Olympian who won a gold medal. At the end of the camp after hearing his end speech, I was incredibly inspired and it hit me, I was just trained by a former Olympian”

Along with honing their skills on the volleyball court, the 90-plus girls walked away with a great experience and many new friends. At DME, we think it is important to try our best and get better at what we came to do, but to also have a good time doing it.

DME Academy Soccer Continues Their Winning Streak

The DME Academy soccer program is coming at you with yet another win this past weekend with a 3-1-0 (undefeated) record after traveling all the way up the East Coast to Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine. They scored 26 goals for and only let up an impressive 1 against. There were hundreds of teams in the 36th Annual Seacoast United Coastal Summer Challenge beating a good Seacoast United Team 2-0 in the finals. Everyone on the team managed to put up points for DME. The team was playing at a handicap because they were playing with only 7 athletes, which means these kids had no subs all game.

Being from Florida, they were out of their element in the harsh North-East spring weather, battling 50 degree temperatures and dealing with wind and rain all weekend. Despite the sub-par weather, the kids still managed to come out on top and have a great time. “We’ve never been to Maine, my friends and I loved it minus the cold. We wanted to win the tournament for Fathers Day and were so happy that we did!.” Ceci Antista says after the final game.

This weekend marked the first win for the girls side of the program, and there is no sign of slowing down says Coach, Jared Antista. “The girls deserved this experience and that’s what we’re all about at DME Academy. This group of girls traveled to new states, tried new food (fresh Maine lobster rolls), forged deeper relationships with their peers, developed as players, battled the elements, and put four more games under their belts. The icing on the cake was winning DME their second tournament championship months.”

DME Academy looks forward to spending the rest of their summer building on these wins and taking their talents to new fields.
